Apple has quietly released the latest versions of its video and motion effects software. Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Motion, and Compressor all have new versions available for Mac users with some minor new features along with stability and performance improvements.

It is not unusual to have the iMovie running slow when editing movies and videos. This can be as a result of the program being given too many commands at the same time which it might be unable to dispense simultaneously. When that happens, the iMovie will definitely end up being slow in functioning. IMovie usually works without a problem. It's completely tested by Apple iMovie's team before releasing to the public. However, every Mac is different even with the same Mojave operating system. The reason might be preferences conflict, sufficient system memory, incompatible video formats, or some unknown issues. IMovie for iOS and iMovie for macOS are designed to work together. You can start cutting a project on your iPhone, then use AirDrop or iCloud Drive to wirelessly transfer it to your iPad. You can also send a project from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac for finishing touches like color correction and animated maps. You can do so directly from iMovie on your Mac. If you could not upload your files, this may be caused by poor network connection. Your Mac needs to have a working Internet connection. On your Mac, open Safari and visit macreports.com. Not worthy of the ‘apple' title I have used Apples for years and iMovie and and off for a while. IMovie has always been at odds with the Apple ethos of ‘it just works'. You would think by now iMovie would have fallen into line with how eveyrthing else works on a Mac but apparently not.

Spotted first by Aaron Zollo, the latest builds of Apple's video suite are showing as updated yesterday but appear to have started showing up widely for users today.

iMovie 10.2.3 for Mac gets a variety of optimizations and bug fixes:

  • Fixes the following issues that could occur when importing projects from iMovie for iOS:
  • Fonts may change when using the Slide and Chromatic title styles
  • Longer titles may shift from one line to two lines
  • Filters may be removed from clips
  • Some projects may fail to import
  • Fixes an issue in which changing an event name in the All Events view may cause that same name to be incorrectly displayed for a different event
  • Includes stability and reliability improvements

Final Cut Pro 10.5.2 just notes 'stability and reliability improvements.'

Motion 5.5.1 features some new features along with optimization and fixes:

  • Adds a new Auto-Shrink option to the Text Layout tab of the Inspector to automatically reduce text size to fit in a paragraph, scroll, or crawl layout
  • Includes UI refinements for macOS Big Sur
  • Includes stability and reliability improvements

And finally Compressor 4.5.2 has new new HEVC Proxy settings and UI refinements along with bug fixes and other improvements:

  • Includes HEVC Proxy settings optimized for use in Final Cut Pro
  • Includes UI refinements for macOS Big Sur
  • Includes stability and reliability improvements

Hello BellzJay,

Thank you for your question. It sounds like your iMovie window is not appearing when you open the program and force quitting it then reopening it does the same thing. I would recommend these staps in particluar to try from the following article:

iMovie: How to troubleshoot 'Application Unexpectedly Quit' messages How to use seagate backup plus portable drive on mac.

1) Verify your software is up to date by running Software Update.

The updates necessary to resolve the issue are those relating to QuickTime, iLife, iMovie and Mac OS X. If any of these updates are available, install the updates. After you install the updates, run Software Update again to verify there are no more updates for that application available.

2) Disable non-essential QuickTime components.

  1. Navigate to /Library/QuickTime/ for a list of components currently installed.
  2. Temporarily disable any components that are not in the list below. You can disable the components by moving them to the Desktop or another folder outside of the /Library/QuickTime/ folder.
  3. Open iMovie and see if the issue is resolved. If iMovie no longer unexpectedly quits, check to see if an updated component is available, or contact the developer of the component for further recommendations.

iMovie uses the following components, and should be left in the QuickTime folder:

  • AppleIntermediateCodec.component
  • AppleMPEG2Codec.component

Not

iMovie uses the following components, and should be left in the QuickTime folder:

  • AppleIntermediateCodec.component
  • AppleMPEG2Codec.component

Note: There may also be a similar folder at ~/Library/QuickTime/ depending on the components you have installed. If this folder is available on your Mac, remove any components as instructed in step 2. Both of these locations hold QuickTime components. The components help you encode or decode different types of multimedia content.

5) Run Apple Hardware Test and Disk Utility

If you are experiencing unexpected behavior in other applications, check your hardware by using Apple Hardware Test. You can also test your hard disks using the Verify and Repair functions of Disk Utility.
